When people think of chiropractic, they often picture the “crack.”
But that’s only one small part of what we do.
At Queensferry Chiropractic, treatment is always tailored to you. That means looking at how your body is working as a whole, not just where the pain is, and choosing techniques based on how you’re moving, what’s being irritated and what’s going to help you most.
Two of the gentler approaches I use regularly are Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) and the Activator method, alongside more traditional hands-on chiropractic adjustments where appropriate.
If you’re unsure about chiropractic, a bit nervous about treatment, or just prefer a lighter approach, these can be a really good place to start.
If you’re based in South Queensferry, Dalmeny, Kirkliston, Winchburgh, North Queensferry or wider Edinburgh and something’s been bothering you, this will give you a better idea of what to expect.
What is SOT (Sacro-Occipital Technique)?

SOT is a gentle, low-force technique that uses specially designed wedges, called blocks, placed under the pelvis.
The positioning of the blocks is very specific. I assess how your body is moving and place them in a way that helps reduce strain through the lower back and pelvis.
SOT looks at the relationship between the sacrum (the base of your spine) and the occiput (the base of your skull), and how these areas work together through the body. When that balance is off, it can influence how load and tension are managed through the spine.
By supporting the pelvis in a specific way, we can help improve how that system is functioning as a whole.
From there, your body responds to that support. Muscles can start to relax, movement can improve and pressure on irritated areas can begin to ease.
It can be helpful for a range of issues, including:
Lower back pain
Pelvic discomfort
Pregnancy-related aches and pains
Ongoing or recurrent back issues
Periods where things feel more sensitive or flared up
It can also be a useful approach for lumbar disc issues, such as disc bulges or irritation, particularly when the area is feeling more sensitive and needs a gentler starting point.
During treatment, I’ll guide you through positioning, reassess as we go and often combine it with other techniques or advice depending on what your body needs that day.
A lot of patients describe it as gentle but effective, and often notice they can move more freely afterwards.
What is the Activator Method?

The Activator is a small handheld instrument that delivers a very quick, precise impulse to a specific joint.
It allows me to work in a very targeted way, helping improve movement in joints that aren’t moving well without the need for twisting or cracking.
Because the movement is so fast and low force, your body doesn’t have time to tense up in response. That means treatment stays comfortable while still being effective.
It works well for:
Mid back and rib irritation
Sensitive or inflamed joints
Patients who prefer a lighter approach
More precise, targeted adjustments
Patients with conditions such as osteoporosis, where a lower-force approach is more appropriate
Because it’s so controlled and low force, it’s a very safe option for people who may not be suitable for more forceful techniques, while still allowing us to improve movement and reduce discomfort.
It’s also useful when we want to be very specific, for example working on smaller joints or when an area is particularly sore.
How do I decide what to use?
That depends on you and what you’re coming in with.
I assess how you’re moving, what’s driving your symptoms and how sensitive things are, then choose the approach that’s most appropriate.
Some people come in in a lot of pain and need a gentler starting point. Others prefer to avoid more traditional hands-on treatment. Some respond better to one approach than another.
Often, I’ll use a combination. For example:
SOT to settle the lower back and pelvis
Activator for more specific joints
Traditional hands-on chiropractic adjustments where appropriate
Exercise and movement advice alongside
Treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it often changes as you improve.
What does this actually help with?
The goal is always the same:
Reduce pain and irritation
Improve how your joints and muscles are working
Help you move more comfortably day to day
Reduce the likelihood of things repeatedly flaring up
This might be back pain that won’t shift, neck tension from desk work or something that keeps coming back when you’re training or exercising, something I commonly see in clinic here in South Queensferry and surrounding areas.
Chiropractic is more than just treatment
Hands-on treatment is only one part of the process.
We’ll also look at:
How you’re moving day to day
Simple exercises to support your recovery
Strength, mobility and control where needed
Lifestyle factors that might be contributing
This is what helps you get longer-lasting results, not just short-term relief.
What if I’m nervous about treatment?
This is really common, and completely understandable.
You’re always in control of what we do. Everything is explained as we go, and treatment can be adapted to suit your comfort level.
For many people, starting with SOT or Activator is a good way to ease into treatment because they’re both gentle but still effective.
Not sure if it’s right for you?
You’re always welcome to come in for a no-obligation consultation to chat things through, ask questions and see if it feels like the right fit.
If you’re based in South Queensferry, Dalmeny, Kirkliston, Winchburgh, North Queensferry or Edinburgh and something’s been bothering you, you don’t have to just put up with it or try to figure it out on your own.
We can work it out together.

Final thought
If you’ve been putting off getting something checked because you’re unsure about chiropractic, or worried it might feel too much, there are options.
Treatment doesn’t have to be forceful to be effective.
Sometimes a more gentle, targeted approach is exactly what your body needs.
