What Does Treatment at Queensferry Chiropractic Involve?

One of the most common questions I get asked is:

"What does treatment actually involve?"

The simple answer is that every treatment plan is tailored to you. No two people move the same way, have the same lifestyle, or experience pain for the same reasons.

My aim is to understand what is contributing to your symptoms and help you move, feel and function better.

Depending on your needs, treatment may include a combination of hands-on techniques, rehabilitation exercises and lifestyle advice.

Which Treatment Is Right For Me?

You may benefit from:

🔹 SMT (Spinal Manipulative Therapy) if joints feel stiff or restricted and need help moving more freely.

🔹 SOT (Sacro-Occipital Technique) if you prefer a gentler approach or are experiencing pelvic or pregnancy-related discomfort.

🔹 Activator Method if you would rather avoid twisting or cracking techniques.

🔹 Exercise & Rehabilitation if you want to improve strength, mobility and long-term resilience.

The good news is that you don't need to decide which approach is right for you. Following your assessment, I'll explain my findings and recommend the treatment options that best suit your needs and preferences.

Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT)

Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT) is the technique many people associate with chiropractic care.

This involves a gentle, specific movement applied to a joint that isn't moving as well as it should. You may hear a "click" or "pop" during treatment, which is simply the release of gas within the joint.

The goal of SMT is to:

  • Improve joint movement

  • Reduce stiffness

  • Help decrease pain

  • Improve overall function

Not everyone needs SMT, and not everyone enjoys it. If it's appropriate and you're comfortable with it, it may form part of your treatment plan.

Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT)

SOT is a gentle chiropractic technique that focuses on the relationship between the pelvis, spine and nervous system.

Treatment often involves the use of specially designed pelvic blocks placed under the pelvis while you lie comfortably on the treatment table. These blocks use your own body weight to encourage relaxation and improved movement patterns.

Many patients find SOT particularly comfortable and relaxing.

SOT can be especially useful for:

  • Lower back pain

  • Pelvic discomfort

  • Pregnancy-related aches and pains

  • People who prefer a gentler treatment approach

Activator Method

The Activator is a small handheld instrument that delivers a very quick, gentle impulse to a specific joint or area of the body.

Because the movement is so fast and controlled, many patients find it comfortable and reassuring.

Activator treatment may be suitable for:

  • Patients who prefer not to have manual adjustments

  • Older adults

  • People with sensitive or painful joints

  • Those who feel nervous about traditional chiropractic treatment

It allows me to provide precise treatment without the need for twisting or cracking movements.

Soft Tissue Therapy

Muscles, tendons and connective tissues can often contribute to pain and movement restrictions.

Depending on your presentation, treatment may include:

  • Soft tissue massage

  • Trigger point therapy

  • Muscle release techniques

  • Dry needling

  • Cupping therapy

These techniques can help reduce tension, improve movement and support recovery.

Exercise and Rehabilitation

Hands-on treatment is only one part of the process.

The most lasting results often come from improving how your body moves and functions between appointments.

Your rehabilitation programme may include:

  • Mobility exercises

  • Strengthening exercises

  • Balance and stability work

  • Core rehabilitation

  • Return-to-sport programmes

  • Gym and exercise technique advice

  • Pregnancy and postnatal rehabilitation where appropriate

  • Women's health and menopause-specific support when needed

Exercises are tailored to your goals, lifestyle and current ability level.

Whether your aim is getting back to gardening, running, lifting weights, playing sport, travelling comfortably or simply moving with less pain, your programme will be designed around what matters most to you.

Advice and Education

Understanding your condition is an important part of recovery.

During your appointments we may discuss:

  • Posture and workstation setup

  • Sleep positions

  • Exercise and training habits

  • Gym and sports performance

  • Lifting techniques

  • Managing flare-ups

  • Stress and recovery

  • Lifestyle factors that may influence symptoms

My patients range from office workers and busy parents to runners, gym-goers, golfers, netball players and active retirees. Advice is always tailored to your lifestyle, goals and the activities that are important to you.

A Treatment Plan Designed Around You

At Queensferry Chiropractic, there is no set formula.

Some patients benefit from spinal manipulation, while others respond better to SOT, Activator, rehabilitation exercises or a combination of approaches.

The most important thing is finding the right treatment for you, your body and your goals.

Treatment is always a collaborative process. I'll explain my findings, discuss your options and work with you to create a plan that fits your needs and preferences.
