Is it just a niggle or something more?

Not every ache or pain means you’ve injured something.
A lot of what people describe as a “niggle” is quite normal, especially if you’re active or spending long periods sitting.
But it can be hard to know when to ignore it and when to do something about it.
What is a niggle?
A niggle is usually something mild:
a bit of tightness
a slight discomfort
something you notice but can still move through
These often settle with a bit of time and movement.
When should you pay more attention?
It’s worth getting it checked if:
it’s not improving
it’s getting worse
it keeps coming back
it’s changing how you move
These are signs it may not settle on its own.
Why guessing can delay things
A common approach is either to push through or stop completely.
But without really knowing what’s going on, it’s easy to do too much or too little. That’s often what leads to things dragging on longer than they need to.
What’s the right approach?
Most of the time, it’s not about extremes.
It’s about finding the right balance and improving how your body is moving. This may include hands-on treatment, along with simple changes to how you move day to day.
If you’re unsure
If you’re not sure whether something is just a niggle or needs attention, getting it checked can give you clarity.
If you’re based in South Queensferry or nearby areas including Dalmeny, Kirkliston, Winchburgh, Fife or Edinburgh, you’re welcome to book in or get in touch first.
