Why Am I Feeling Stiffer in My 40s and 50s?

Have you noticed that getting out of bed in the morning takes a little longer than it used to? Or perhaps your hips feel stiff after sitting at your desk, your shoulders ache after a busy day, or your usual exercise routine suddenly feels harder?
It's something I hear quite often in clinic, particularly from women in their 40s and 50s.
The good news is that feeling stiff doesn't automatically mean you're getting old or that you need to slow down.

Why do we start feeling stiffer?
There isn't always one simple explanation.
Our muscles and joints respond to how we use them, and things like prolonged sitting, changes in activity, sleep and recovery can all influence how we feel.
For women approaching or going through menopause, hormonal changes may also play a part.
Joint aches, muscle pain and stiffness are recognised symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. But it's important not to assume every new ache is hormone-related, as there can be other explanations too.
Does this mean I should exercise less?
Not necessarily!
In fact, staying active is one of the best things you can do to support your muscles, joints and overall health as you get older.
That doesn't mean pushing through significant pain or ignoring what your body is telling you. Sometimes it's about making small adjustments to how you're moving, training and recovering.
What can you do to help?
Keep moving throughout the day
If you spend long periods sitting, try getting up regularly and changing position. Even a short walk or a few gentle movements can help break up those prolonged periods of inactivity.
Make strength training part of your routine
Maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important as we get older. You don't have to lift heavy weights or join a gym. Resistance exercises can be adapted to your starting point and ability.
Don't forget about recovery
Sleep, nutrition and allowing your body time to recover all matter. If you're noticing that your usual activities are leaving you feeling more tired or sore, it might be worth looking at your overall routine.
Get persistent aches and pains assessed
If something keeps bothering you, affects your usual activities or isn't improving, it's worth finding out what's going on rather than simply accepting it as part of getting older.
How can chiropractic care help?
At Queensferry Chiropractic, I take time to understand what's happening, how your symptoms are affecting your day-to-day life and what you'd like to get back to doing.
Treatment may include hands-on care, exercises and practical advice to help you manage your symptoms and keep moving with confidence.
My aim isn't just to focus on where something hurts, but to help you understand what might be contributing to it and what you can do to help yourself.
And if your symptoms suggest something that needs further medical investigation, I'll always discuss that with you.
You don't have to just put up with it
Whether you want to keep enjoying your gym sessions, play with your children or grandchildren, get back to a favourite activity or simply feel more comfortable day to day, you deserve to feel confident in your body.
If ongoing aches, pains or stiffness are getting in the way, I'd be happy to help.
